Adventure Shadow Box by DT Monica

Monica, here  I am back with an inspiration post. I made a Mixed Media Shadowbox and I titled this "Adventure".

For this, I took an MDF square shadow box measuring 6*6". I sanded the box roughly and cleaned it. Next, I brushed it with Papericious Black Heavy Gesso. Once it dried, I  used a brick stencil with Prima sand texture paste to add some texture inside and outside of the box. I added embellishments and used a cardboard with twine around it and stuck it to the base. I again brushed everything with gesso, and once dry I started adding colours. I used Prima Art Alchemy Light Gold, Aged Bronze and some acrylic colours Burnt Sienna, Prussian Blue and White.

Quilled Ganesh and Lotus Tealight holder by DT Ishani

Hello Dear Crafters,

 

I hope you had lovely Diwali celebrations. What a moment of pride we had when we didn't hear any crackers in our society, a moment of joy today and for our future. We must leave our earth for our kids at least liveable and breathable, just as our parents gave it to us. Lets carry on the cheer and celebrations in this post as well for the festive season of Diwali and let me show you how I made a 3-D Quilled Ganesh Fridge Magnet and a Quilled  Lotus Tea light holder.

3 D Ganesh Fridge Magnet

For this you will need:

Quilling strips (5mm, 3mm)

Quilling slotted tool

Glue

Card board base

Pretty pattern paper

Magnetic sheet

Scissors

1.  I took skin coloured 5mm quilling strips and stuck four of them together and started coiling it and shaping it in the form of Ganesh’s head and trunk. After achieving the desired shape, stick the strip and also apply a coat of glue inside the hollow, so that the shape holds.

2.    With the similar colors I shaped the ears, arms, hands and feet. I used a red color strips for the chest and stomach and orange to make the dhoti laden legs. I used 3mm strips only for His ears, hands and feet. I arranged them to see if they would fit in togeteher. Make sure to apply glue inside or behind the shapes to hold them in place or else while arranging the pieces the coils may slip off.

 

3.    For the base I took an old tag and covered it with a paper (you could use patterned paper) on which I stamped swastika (I earlier did one on crème paper then decided to use orange). Behind the tag I put a piece of 3mm wide magnetic sheet. Check the side which has magnetic effect and stick the opposite side to the tag.

4.    For the features I used 3mm strip of dark brown strip of paper for His eyes, eyebrows, white for tusks and red for the tilak.

 

 

5.   Now that my all elements were ready, I arranged the shapes and stuck them together. 

 

Quilled Lotus Tealight/diya holder

For this you will need:

Quilling strips (5mm)

Quilling slotted tool

Glue

Card board base

Acrylic paint

Brush

Tea light

Washi tape

Scissors

1.  Choose the 5mm strips of the colour of your choice. In my project I use five colours of Orange and red family. I planned to make it a lotus shape and so all the shapes are tear drop shape. 

2. I personally prefer to tear the paper even at the ends before sticking them together. They give a neat look when rolled into any shape.

3. With a slotted needle I roll out the shapes, four strips stuck together, rolled, shaped into a tear- drop shape and stuck with glue after tearing off the end.

 

4. The number of tear drops that you will require will depend upon the base you decide to have. I have a 9cm diameter circle cut off a waste card board, for which my outer most layer had 20 tear drops. I give it a paint coat in similar color of my strips of paper and at the outer edge stick my quilled tear drops with glue (the tweezer and slotted tool are supporting them till they dry).

5.  I put some pretty washi tape  around the tealight, to make it look festive too.  And then, after some sweet labour of rolling and shaping, arranged and stuck the different colored tear drops in two more concentric circles.

 

      

6.  All put together, the quilled lotus tealight holder looks like this.

Itty Bitty Accordion Mini Album by DT Kriti

Namaste Friends!!

This is Kriti and today I'll inspire you all with a cute little itty bitty mini album.

I love making these kinds of mini albums. Making your own mini albums gives you such a sense of accomplishment. This mini album can be easily completed in an hour or so and this can be a perfect last minute gift. Record special life moments in these tiny books that a loved one will treasure forever. 

These are so fun to make that you will want to give them to everyone you know.

So, here is the project:

Size of this album is 3-1/4" x 3-1/4".

Here's a brief on how to make it:

Take a cardstock of size 9" x 3-1/4". Score it at 3-1/4", 3-3/4", 7", 7-1/2" on the 9" side. This will be the cover.

Now take two cardstocks of size 12" x 3". Score both of them at 3", 6", and 9" on the 12" side and join them at the end pages so that they make a complete accordion. (If u want to add more photos you can attach more pages accordingly).

Now for the belly band, take a cardstock of size 1" x 8-1/2". Score it at 3-1/4", 3-7/8", 7-1/8" and 7-3/4 on the 8- 1/2" side.

Mat them with your choice of scrapbook paper. And your cute little itty bitty mini album is ready.

Celebratory Keepsake stand Tutorial by DT Khushboo

Hie guys! Good morning, and welcome to this beautiful celebration of lights! I'm Khushboo and I'm here with an inspiring (I hope so :D) tutorial post, keeping our current challenge theme: 'Celebration and Lights' in mind. 

Light could mean anything - be it the colours of light (yellow, orange, ochre) or sun rays, bulbs, brightness, etc. I've tried to interpret this challenge in a slightly off-beat colour i.e. Golden. Often times we forget, just how beautiful sun rays look in a far off stretch of water - the golden hue on water. If the angle's right, light has a brilliant golden touch and I wanted to capture that in my project. 

So let's get on with our tutorial of a 'Celebratory Keepsake Stand', which you can use as a pen stand, a cutlery stand - or basically, any stand that you need it to be. But that's not all, I will also teach you a slightly unconventional technique - that you can whip up any time - and the effect it leaves you with is super stunning! 

Step 1: 

Take your chipboard and cut these sizes: four pieces of 5x3 inches (for the walls of the stand) + one piece of 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (for the base) + four strips of 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches. 

Step 2: 

Take a strong adhesive and glue all the four walls together as shown in the pics below. Strong glue will ensure that your stand won't fall haphazardly if you put something as heavy as your cutlery in it.

Step 3: 

Once dry, glue the edges and attach the structure to your base. Now start adding the thin strips of chipboard at the edges of the base. This is to create a meek space that will hold your paper pins and rubber bands (in case you opt for it to be a pen stand). I goofed up a bit with my measurements, and hence I was left with space for only two of my four strips to be attached. 

Step 4: 

Now comes the fun part! I'll show you this technique with a glue gun that gives a nice bubbly effect to your stand. Get your pretty glue guns and let the fun begin! Heat the gun nicely, and start making whatever designs you want - swirlies, borders, flowers, aztec patterns, anything! Hold the gun steady while you're doing this coz the more the heat gun wavers, the more your design will show wobbly on the stand. I suggest you first try a few designs on a scrap. That will give you an idea of your range of pressure on the gun and improve your designs with every practice!

Step 5: 

This is how one of the sides of my stand looks. I know, it looks a little disruptive. But it gets better, I promise :P!

This side turned out to be pretty! I just started playing around with the patterns!

Step 7: 

Now here's the thing - notice all the glue webs in the below pic? That happens coz your glue's melted and when you're making the designs, the glue's continuously dripping from the nozzle in it's semi-liquid state. But don't worry - just try to remove them with your hands or a brush or even a heat gun! They'll blow right off!

Step 7: 

Once you're done with your glue gun designs, let the stand dry nicely for a minute or two. Then spray the entire stand with a golden spray - let it dry, and then spray it again. Let it dry completely.

Don't forget to spray the inside and the base on the outside, too! I've sprayed these in a beautiful silver colour to give a stark contrast.

Step 8: 

Now spray an orange colour spray randomly on your design, and wipe it off with a tissue. Such subtle colour hues enhances your overall look in a project.

Step 9: 

Once you're done, get your acrylic paints out and get on with dry-brushing with them. Dry-brushing means taking your acrylic paints in a dry paint brush (no water absolutely!) and with a light hand, stroking over your designs. If you look at the pic below, I've taken an orange colour acrylic paint and dry brushed the length of the feather. It's that easy!

Step 10: 

The technique part ends here. From here on, you will see the finished stand with a few details shared here and there.

Notice how I added a crackle glaze at the top and let it drip. It added such a beautiful depth and texture to my stand!

I added a flower and I covered the entire stand with free hand flowers and dots using a golden colour glitter glue

I also added the glitter glue on the top rims to tie the whole theme together! 

Step 11: 

Once you're done with your embellishments, spray clear varnish all over to seal the glitter and the paints inside and increase the shelf life of your product!
