Shutter Card Tutorial by DT Priyadarshini

Hi everyone,
I am on the blog today with a tutorial for you all. My project for today is a shutter card. It's easy and simple to make. This card can be used for birthdays, holidays, etc.. and is a fun card. Once you get a hang of how to make it, it is super fun.

Let's start:

PART 1 - SCORING AND PREPARING

Size of card stock (all in inches):

The base of the card (A) - 10 x 7 

Shutter (B) - 4 1/4 x 3 5/8 (2 nos)  

Center panel (C) - 3 3/4 x 7  

1. Score the base of the card (A) at 2 1/2 inches on both sides and crease well. 

2. Score the shutter pieces (B) at 1/2 inch only on one side (the 4 1/4 inch side). Score on both the shutter pieces. Crease the scored line well.

3. Open the creased line of the shutter pieces and mark 1 7/8 inch and centre the marking, do this for both the shutter pieces (I have marked how to mark from the edge in the picture)

4. Connect the ends of the card stock to the marked centre point and draw a thin line and cut this triangle out for both the shutter pieces.

5. The shutter is ready.

6. Take the centre panel piece (C) and mark at 7/8 of an inch from the top.

7. Place a circle die on the mark and die cut using a die cut machine. I used the Big Shot. I also embossed the centre panel (this is optional). 

8. The final marking is on the base of the card. Mark 2 5/8 inch from the top and draw a line across. 

PART 2 - ASSEMBLING THE CARD

9. Paste two pieces of white cardstock on either side of the base cardstock measuring  2 3/8 x 6 7/8 inch (to write a personal message)

10. Line the tip of the shutter triangle with the line (step 8)

11. Paste the shutter onto the base. Place the shutter and use double-sided adhesive on the upper part of the shutter. 

12. Use a stamped image or a photo. I fussy cut my stamped images and adhered it to a piece of white cardstock measuring 4 x 4 inches. 

13. Adding the centre panel to the card. Use double-sided foam tape for this step. I used a very thin strip of tape on the top of the card (shutter action does not get obstructed) and bigger ones below. 

14. I used different images from the same stamp set and friend sentiment to complete the card.

• Cardstock - Kraft, White or any colour
• Mini remix happy stamps from The Greetings Farm - Images
• Best friends from Clearly Besotted - Sentiment
• Circle Dies
• Big shot
• Ann Griffin embossing folder (optional)
• Martha Stewart Scoreboard
• Paper trimmer
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Scale
• Double sided tape, white glue or tacky glue

Layered Card Inspiration by DT Khushboo

Good morning guys! 

This is Khushboo Gandhi here, with an inspiration post this week. For my project this time, I chose to show you guys how you can achieve layering when you're making cards. Sometimes layering looks complicated, but it's not that difficult. There's a simple technique to it - and it all comes down to balancing out your elements on the card.

So let's take a look first at what I've created.

Materials used:

• White cardstock

• Aqua blue cardstock 

• Chipboard

• Washi tape

• Designer corner punch

• Glue

• Designer paper/tags

• Sentiment

• Pearl brads

• Wooden embellishment

• Lindy's brown spray paint

• Paint brush

• Brown distress ink

• Printer paper

Brief steps for creating a card with layers:

• Take an A4 sized white cardstock and score in the middle of it - to fold it into two and serve as a base (and the first) layer of the card.

• For the second layer - take an aqua blue cardstock and cut it 1/8th inch less than that of your white card. Punch the corners with a designer corner punch.

• Add chipboard underneath it (to give it a 3d effect) and stick it onto the base.

• For the third layer - take your pattern paper and cut it in the shape of tags. If you want, you can stick it onto a black cardstock before sticking it on the chipboard, and then onto the aqua blue cardstock.

• Take your brown distress ink and distress the edges of the cardstocks.

• Curl or distress the edges of your tags to give it more depth and character.

• For the base line, below the tags, take a thin strip of printer paper and cover it with a washi tape of your choice. Stick it underneath the tags to make the card more cohesive.

• Stick a sentiment of your choice, with pearl brads at its ends.

• Finally, splash some brown spray around the card.

Interactive card tutorial by DT Ishani

Hello Dear Crafters,

I am back today to share with you a tutorial on card making. I am sure this post will help all of you who want to try and make a card with a different technique and don't know where to begin!

Twirling Fairy

I am sure you love interactive cards like I do.  It gives you more joy when you see the recipient enjoying playing with it.
So, today I have a fairy card which twirls or spins.

For this card you'll need:

• Cardstock For the card base - 14 x 28 cms (180 gsm)

• Cardstock For inlay - 12 x 12 cms (180 gsm)

• Pattern Paper - 14 x 14 cms (120 gsm)

• An image/stamp (I used a digital image)

• White cardstock for printing the image (I used Papericious 180 gsm)

• Craft knife

• Ruler

• Pencil

• Plastic cord

• Double sided tape

• Glue

• Colours (I used Koi brush pens & Camlin watercolour pencils)

• Embellishments (I used spectrum noir pen, half pearls, Glossy accent and shaker elements) 

Let's begin making it

1.  Decide your subject image, as the dimensions of the card may vary for you. I got a digital stamp printed on a sheet of cardstock. Take the cardstock of 14 x 28 cms and score it in half to create a top folding card.You have to cut one side of the card to create a window. If you have a die cutting machine and a die that cuts a window in which the image can move effortlessly, go ahead. But if you don't have all this, just take a craft knife and first mark your markings and cut with the knife.

                                              

 

2.  Now, cut the pattern paper of the desired dimensions. I cut a rhombus of 8x8 cms to ensure my fairy moved effortlessly.

3. Similarly, on the cardstock align the cutout window of the patter paper and cut similar window.

4. Now attach the card
base and the patter paper, so that the windows align together. I used a double sided tape for it. Using glue might warp the paper.

5. I only had the front side of the fairy, so I cut the similar image but on the plain side I drew her dress and hair. It was an easy image so I could do so. So be careful while
choosing an image to spin. There are many companies which make the spinning
card version stamps with the front and backside image available.

6.  I coloured the image with watercolours (koi pens and pencils). I used some gold and silver colour for her crown and wand. I used some embellishments, like glossy accents and shaker elements on her wand. With spectrum noir sparkle brush I put some sparkle on her gown and some half pearls for her crown.

7. Now that the images are ready, we need to put it together so that our fairy twirls. Take that plastic cord or any other neutral colour strong cord and place it carefully at the centre of your image. Stick it up with a strong tape and then stick both the parts of the image. You must ensure that the cord is straight before you stick the parts up. Check how it looks when suspended.

8. It is ready to be assembled and put in its window. I attached the cord with a strong tape and used a pretty washi tape to hide it. Change the direction of the image, to see if it's centred properly.

9. Now that the card is almost ready, I realised that if I write inside the card, it will be visible through the window. So, to cover it up I took 12 x 12 cms similar cardstock and stuck it inside.

10. Twirl your fairy and put it in an envelope, when the recipient opens the card, the fairy will twirl. 

I hope you enjoyed this and will make your own twirly interactive card/ spinning card. I have enjoyed making it and I and my family love to play with it. I don't think I'll be able to keep it safe to be presented to someone!
