Die Cutting Techniques by DT Priyadarshini

Hello Everyone,

I am here with a different tutorial post for Rainbow Craftykari Blog. My post will be about Die Cutting techniques with some tips and this is a long post as I have covered a lot here.

Die cutting is a popular process among crafters these days. It involves a metal die that cuts through paper, acetate, felt, jute (burlap), etc... using a die cut machine. There are several dies and die cutting machines available with a huge price range.

Materials required:

1. Big shot die cutting machine - Sizzix

2. Dies:

    a. Birch press design - Sevilla layer dies, Fiori plate layer dies, Fiori heart layer dies

    b. Joy Craft floral flourish

    c. Little birdie - leaves

    d. Lawn Fawn - Goodie bag

    e. Altenew Cameilla dies

    f. Sizzix thinlit 7 piece - Peacock

    g. Heartfelt Butterfly border

3. Stamps:

Altenew, Craftyscrappers, Reverse confetti, Heratfelt creations

4. Card stock - white, green, red, silver, black

5. Jute/Burlap - white, light yellow, dark yellow, green

6. Felt - pink, dark pink, green, yellow

7. Gem stones

8. Altenew inks

9. Papericious pattern paper

10. Bob n Betty decoupage paper

11. Glue

     a. Tacky glue

     b. Hot glue gun (jute, felt)

     c. Double sided tape

12. Spellbinders Tool N One

Let's get started

1. Dies used for background

Here, I have made 3 cards with a different technique to make the background. I love how dies give a unique and beautiful look to cards when used in the background. I am using my favourite die sets here from Birch Press designs. Birch press has the best-layered die sets.

1. For this card, I used a die from Birch press design to create a background. This is very basic and easy background.

How to make this

I took a silver card stock and placed my die (Fiori plate layer C) on the card stock and run it through my big shot.

I adhered the die cut piece to black cardstock and added the sentiment from Altenew to it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. For the second card, I am using layered dies from Birch Press design (Sevilla layer set). Its a beautiful die set which can be used separately or together.

How to make this
I told 3 card stocks of one colour with different shades (can also use a different colour for this). One colour for each layer. Place the die on the cardstock and run it through the big shot.

It's time to stack up these dies together. I always start stacking from the top layer to the last layer.  I added a sentiment from Craftyscrappers and finished the card by adding some gemstones.

2. Layered/stackable dies

I have used layered/stackable dies from Birch press. I have used Fiori heart layer dies for this card.

How to make this
Stacking up die technique are the same as the previous card.  I used red, pink and white cardstock for this card. I ran each die cut through my big shot and used tacky glue to adhere them together.

I adhered the heart to a white top-fold card stock and added one stone to the centre. I left the card as it is and didn't add a sentiment.

  3. Die cut in-lay

Die cut inlay is the most fun technique when the right die is used. A lot of dies can be used for this technique which also includes alphabet dies. Here I used one layer of Birch press Sevilla dies. The best part about this technique is that you will end up with two cards out of this technique. It is just like fitting a jigsaw puzzle. The same technique can be used with intricate dies as well but they are a little time-consuming.

How to make this
I took layer A of the die set and die cut them from green and red cardstock. Save all the die cut pieces. I used this die so it's easy to show how the technique works.

I am exchanging the die cut pieces that are green with red and red with green. Adhered the base piece to white cardstock.

I used tacky glue to adhere the pieces into the die cut. It's exactly like a jigsaw puzzle.

I repeated the same with the other card as same. I left some white spaces shown and added stone there instead of die cut. It's not necessary to use all the die cut pieces for inlay technique.

4.  Jute/burlap and felt die cut

Die cut doesn't just involve paper cutting but jute/burlap and felt as well. I generally run them at least 4-5 times through my big shot to get a perfect die cut result. Good quality die cut and jute may just require it to be run just twice. But I run it 5 times.
For felt, I run them just twice over the big shot. It depends on the quality of the felt sheets as well.
I used floral flourish die from Joy Crafts and Little birdie leaves die set.
I used white, light yellow, dark yellow jute for the flower and green for leaves.

How to make this
Decide on the colour and the dies. I placed the die cuts on the jute and run them through my big shot.

Adhere the petals together to form a flower. I used a hot glue gun to adhere them together. Using tacky glue adhere them to a white top-fold card.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The same technique applies to making flowers with a felt material. I used tacky glue to adhere them together. I have used this flower in my next section.

5.  Goodie bag using die

Making your own gift/goodie bag is total fun. Most of them trim the paper and score and cut and make bags. But how fun would it be if there are dies to make these bags.
I have made a goodie bag using Lawn Fawn goodie bag die using pattern paper from papericious. This die is amazing as it also has scored lines which makes it easy to turn it into a bag.

How to make this
Take 2 pieces of pattern paper and place the die and them through the die cut machine. We need 2 pieces of the same die cut to make the bag.

Apply glue on the marked places. Since we have 2 die cut pieces, apply glue only on one of the bag base.

Now its time to turn them into a bag and add the felt embellishment.

6.  Shadow alphabet sentiment die

Adding a sentiment to a card adds something to a card or project. Adding a die cut sentiment is more fun and just the sentiment makes the card beautiful. I have die cut HELLO sentiment from white and black cardstock.

How to make this
I used decoupage paper from Bob N Betty for background and die cut HELLO from black and white cardstock. A different way to use decoupage paper.

To create the shadow effect, adhere the black letters on the white slightly offsetting them. I added some gemstones to finish the card.

7.  Building up a die cut

Building up a die to create something awesome is total fun. I am using Peacock dies from Sizzix. I made a peacock in white. The entire process is building up a die just like using layered stamps. The die set consists of a total of 7 pieces and its a perfect set for making a peacock. I love white peacocks and I thought I would make one here instead of blue-green.

How to make this:

First I die cut all pieces from white cardstock and eyes from black cardstock.

I started stacking up all the small feathers to the body of the peacock starting from the bottom of the die cut.

I added all the pieces together to form a white peacock.

I used a stamp from reverse confetti-peacock pretties to stamp my background. I used blue, violet, green for the background since my peacock is white.

8.  Stamp and die cut

This is technique is commonly used by many crafters. Many stamps come along with matching die sets. Some stamps which are large don not need die cuts since they can be fuzzy cut by hand but intricate stamps do require matching dies if added separately like a border.

I have shown two examples here. The first one using Altenew build a flower stamp and die set.

How to make this:

I stamped the build a flower using Misti stamping tool (easy to line up for layered stamping)

I die cut both flower and leaves. I used a stencil to make a background and adhered by stamped pieces on it. Used sentiment from the same stamp set.

I just wanted to show how dies are necessary for intricate stamps. The second one is using some stamps.

How to make this:

I stamped this onto a white card and used matching dies to die cut.

Once die cut...  you could see how the die has cut all the intricate places from the stamped piece.

My post for today ends here and hope it was useful.

Tea Coasters- DT Megha inspired by DT Priyadarshini

Hello everyone!

Hope you're having a great week and enjoying the month with rains.

I am here with a new inspiration post for Rainbow Craftykari blog. For this month's inspiration,  as you all know we have a twist in our inspiration posts, we are getting inspired by our very own Design Team.

My project is inspired by the wonderful artist, and a very calm person, Priyadarshini!
I went through her DT posts. All of these were far from my style of work, she is a brilliant paper craft crafter and artist.

Then I came across the creation that caught my attention when I saw her Tea CoastersI Love the idea of the 3D effect, the pearls on this project and got inspired by this.

I started with preparing the coasters using gold shimmer paint and let them dry. I took flower sheets meant for Sospeso and fuzzy cut them and shaped them. I adhered these flowers on the coasters and also added dimension with pearls in the centre of the flowers and the coaster stand.

And the results are here for you to see,

Hope you get inspired by the project and go through Priyadarshini's blog whenever you can. She has some brilliant paper craft projects!

Supplies used:
  • MDF Coasters and Stand
  • Sospeso flowers prints
  • Glue Gun
  • Pearls
  • Acrylic Gold shimmer Paint
  • Sizzors

Oil Painting Inspiration by DT Saloni

Greetings Everyone,

How have you been?
It's me Saloni here, Today I have created a Texture painting to share with all of you. If you've ever spread icing on a cake, you have an idea of the texture possibilities when using a palette knife to create an oil painting.

Take a look

I started the canvas with roughly designing the picture that I wanted. Once done, I started adding colours to it. There are two ways of doing it:- Either you can add texture first and then colour it or you can colour the entire canvas and add texture accordingly. Choose a palette knife based on the shape, as different shapes will create different effects. The way you hold the knife, its angle to the canvas, the amount of paint on the blade and the direction you pull it through the paint on the surface, all add different effects. It's super easy and fun and with minimum products, you can achieve great textures.

Some more close up shots:

Material used:

  • Canvas
  • Oil painting
  • painting knife
  • Painting Brush

I hope I was able to inspire you all.
Keep Checking the space for some amazing inspiration from my fellow team members.

Image Transfer Tutorial by DT Vidhi

Hello Friends,

How are you doing? I am back again with my tutorial post for Rainbow Craftykari blog. Recently we celebrated " World Environment Day " !!! A worldwide movement to clean up the planet and ban plastic and everywhere campaigns are going on. In India, we use a lot of plastic!!! But " Beat Plastic Pollution " campaign really raised awareness and inspired action on plastic pollution.  So here is my little contribution towards it.

Our small act has made a huge contribution to saving our planet. So I decided to stop using plastic bags now on wards. That's why I bought a cloth bag . But as a creative person we don't like anything simple and plain :)  So I thought of a makeover for this bag with the Image Transfer Technique.

Now lets create  our ECO BAG !!!

1) Step 1 - Select Image and Print !

To do the transfer , you will require an image. So first choose any print that interests you. It can be any image of self designed photo or picture or image taken from the internet. You will require a laser printout of the selected image but remember laser printout only, as an inkjet print will bleed when applying the medium. Another most important point to keep in mind is that you will need to mirror the image before printing.

Once your image print is ready, the picture will be adhered face down, and hence if it's an image with the script you can read it the right way if you ensured the mirror image print. The print needs to be on the regular printing paper and not on a thick paper.

2) Step 2 - Adhere the print on the bag!

As we are doing Image Transfer on light colour fabric bag so we don't have to apply any primer on its surface but if you will do any project on wood or metal or plastic then you have to apply a coat of primer or gesso.

The image has to be adhered face down. The Photo transfer medium or Mod Podge should be applied both on the part of the surface ( On the bag ) and the side of the paper that has the image (the side with the image that is going to be adhered face down ). Do not use loads of mediums. Just enough to adhere, covering all areas. Just how we do our regular decoupage.

3) Step 3 - Remove bubbles or creases!

Adhere the paper carefully , without any bubbles or creases. This is very important for a good and complete transfer. Adhere one side and pressing down , gradually move towards the other. Make sure you adhere the edges well as they tend to come off ( later at rubbing stage ) if not stuck well. But a top coat of medium is not required on paper. Remember this step otherwise it is hard to remove the paper later.

4) Step 4 - Drying time !

Once the image is adhered , you need to leave it aside for 8 to 10 hrs for good results. I prefer to leave it overnight.

5) Step 5 - Rub the paper

Next step is very crucial and needs lots of patience ...It is removing the layers of papers to see the image transferred. Use a moist sponge and dampen the paper enough , so that you can see the image . Wait for a minute and then start rubbing out the paper gently with sponge or hand. I prefer rubbing out with my hand.

Do it in a circular motion. Remember the paper is made of layers and we are removing one layer at a time. Once you remove one layer , again slightly damp the paper and remove the next layer. Do it slowly till you see the image. I did it in small portions.

Sharing a set of various stages to explain the above. Hope this helps...Do not harshly try to remove all layers at one time.

6) Step 6 - Final image and seal it !

After you complete Step 5 this is how the image looked when transferred on the bag. Now once the image is transferred , it needs to be sealed with a coat of Photo transfer medium or Mod podge. The medium works as a sealant and dries clear.

7) Step 7 - Touch up and Highlighting !

After sealing the image , I worked around the borders of my image. There are few , minor off white patches. However, I did not want to rub further ( otherwise it will destroy the image) so I coloured it with Black Acrylic colour  to cover it. I highlighted some portions of the image with Brown ink colour and eye with blue colour.

8) Step 8 - Stamping and decorating
To add more interest , I used script stamp and stamped it with Archival Black ink. As the image also has some script on it. I did not want to do much on this as I love its simple outcome.

At last, I decided to decorate it with Rainbow Craftykari's new launch product... MDF embellishments. There are many different shapes in it but I preferred  a round shape which will go well with the Cameras's round shutter in the image. I coloured the circles with Brown ink and heat embossed them with clear embossing powder. Then distressed the edges with Black ink.

And it's done !!! The process looks lengthy but it is not! It just requires patience!!!

Supplies used :
  • A cloth bag
  • A laser print
  • Image transfer or Mod Podge medium
  • Sponge
  • Water
  • Archival Black , Blue and Brown ink
  • Rainbow Craftykari's MDF embellishments
  • Glue
  • Black acrylic colour
  • Clear embossing powder
  • Versamark clear ink pad
Hope you like my project !!! And please take an initiative not to use Plastic anymore. Let's  make this a conscious habit and keep creating your ECO bags.

Dream Catcher- DT Priyadarshini inspired by DT Vidhi

Hello Everyone,

First of all i would like to share that our Rainbow Craftykari Blog has been chosen in TOP 100 Scrapbooking blogs over the web!!
https://blog.feedspot.com/scrapbooking_blogs/

We can't express how much overwhelmed we are, this happen all because of your support and love. Thank you so much everyone for showering unconditional love and support. Keep visiting at our blog and get inspired every day!

Moving on to my today's inspiration post. I have taken inspiration from our design team member and my friend Vidhi Jadeja. She is an amazing crafter and you must check her BLOG

For today's post, I have made a dream catcher using an old embroidery hoop and used foamiran flowers.

I was inspired by one of her cards made for the team last month. Check out that card HERE.

Materials required:

1. Embroidery hoop - 2 different sizes (can be made with one hoop)
2. Jute twine/cord (multicolour)
3. Hot glue gun
4. White pearls and colour beads
5. Feathers
6. MDF butterfly
7. Fabric glue/ white glue
8. Foamiran
    a) Flowers
    b) Leaves
    c) Pollens
    d) Styrofoam buds
    e) Iron box to heat the flowers

How I made:

1. I took two different sizes of embroidery hoops and started wrapping them using jute twine/cord. I used fabric glue to stick the end of the twine to the hoop. (can use a drop of hot glue to secure the end of the twines)

2. Take twine and add pearls and beads and tie feathers to the end and secure with a drop of hot glue gun so the feathers don't fall off.

3. Add these to the hoop using a hot glue gun.

4. Made 3 roses using foamiran (yellow, pink, blue) and small flowers and leaves. Used hot glue to add them to the hoop.

5. Added MDF butterfly with hot glue to the dream catcher.
