Celebratory Keepsake stand Tutorial by DT Khushboo

Hie guys! Good morning, and welcome to this beautiful celebration of lights! I'm Khushboo and I'm here with an inspiring (I hope so :D) tutorial post, keeping our current challenge theme: 'Celebration and Lights' in mind. 

Light could mean anything - be it the colours of light (yellow, orange, ochre) or sun rays, bulbs, brightness, etc. I've tried to interpret this challenge in a slightly off-beat colour i.e. Golden. Often times we forget, just how beautiful sun rays look in a far off stretch of water - the golden hue on water. If the angle's right, light has a brilliant golden touch and I wanted to capture that in my project. 

So let's get on with our tutorial of a 'Celebratory Keepsake Stand', which you can use as a pen stand, a cutlery stand - or basically, any stand that you need it to be. But that's not all, I will also teach you a slightly unconventional technique - that you can whip up any time - and the effect it leaves you with is super stunning! 

Step 1: 

Take your chipboard and cut these sizes: four pieces of 5x3 inches (for the walls of the stand) + one piece of 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (for the base) + four strips of 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches. 

Step 2: 

Take a strong adhesive and glue all the four walls together as shown in the pics below. Strong glue will ensure that your stand won't fall haphazardly if you put something as heavy as your cutlery in it.

Step 3: 

Once dry, glue the edges and attach the structure to your base. Now start adding the thin strips of chipboard at the edges of the base. This is to create a meek space that will hold your paper pins and rubber bands (in case you opt for it to be a pen stand). I goofed up a bit with my measurements, and hence I was left with space for only two of my four strips to be attached. 

Step 4: 

Now comes the fun part! I'll show you this technique with a glue gun that gives a nice bubbly effect to your stand. Get your pretty glue guns and let the fun begin! Heat the gun nicely, and start making whatever designs you want - swirlies, borders, flowers, aztec patterns, anything! Hold the gun steady while you're doing this coz the more the heat gun wavers, the more your design will show wobbly on the stand. I suggest you first try a few designs on a scrap. That will give you an idea of your range of pressure on the gun and improve your designs with every practice!

Step 5: 

This is how one of the sides of my stand looks. I know, it looks a little disruptive. But it gets better, I promise :P!

This side turned out to be pretty! I just started playing around with the patterns!

Step 7: 

Now here's the thing - notice all the glue webs in the below pic? That happens coz your glue's melted and when you're making the designs, the glue's continuously dripping from the nozzle in it's semi-liquid state. But don't worry - just try to remove them with your hands or a brush or even a heat gun! They'll blow right off!

Step 7: 

Once you're done with your glue gun designs, let the stand dry nicely for a minute or two. Then spray the entire stand with a golden spray - let it dry, and then spray it again. Let it dry completely.

Don't forget to spray the inside and the base on the outside, too! I've sprayed these in a beautiful silver colour to give a stark contrast.

Step 8: 

Now spray an orange colour spray randomly on your design, and wipe it off with a tissue. Such subtle colour hues enhances your overall look in a project.

Step 9: 

Once you're done, get your acrylic paints out and get on with dry-brushing with them. Dry-brushing means taking your acrylic paints in a dry paint brush (no water absolutely!) and with a light hand, stroking over your designs. If you look at the pic below, I've taken an orange colour acrylic paint and dry brushed the length of the feather. It's that easy!

Step 10: 

The technique part ends here. From here on, you will see the finished stand with a few details shared here and there.

Notice how I added a crackle glaze at the top and let it drip. It added such a beautiful depth and texture to my stand!

I added a flower and I covered the entire stand with free hand flowers and dots using a golden colour glitter glue

I also added the glitter glue on the top rims to tie the whole theme together! 

Step 11: 

Once you're done with your embellishments, spray clear varnish all over to seal the glitter and the paints inside and increase the shelf life of your product!

Photo frame Tutorial by DT Anila

Hello, Friends!

I am back on the blog again with a tutorial post. This time I have a tutorial for a DIY photo frame.

I have explained it with complete details and lots of pictures making it easier for you to recreate the same.

With Diwali around the corner, I am sure this will be an awesome gift for your loved ones. I feel there is no other gift more personalized than photographs. Gifting memories in the form of photos are the best gift ever. But it is also necessary that your memorable photograph is framed in an equally beautiful photo-frame.

Let's learn how to make this frame with minimal supplies at hand.

Over to my Tutorial.

Cut 2 pieces of 7"x9" cardboard from a sheet.(This frame is for a 4 x 6 photo. The size of the cardboard pieces should be 1 and 1/2" more than the photo size from all 4 sides)

 

 

 

Mark the photo size - 4" x 6" in the centre of the cardboard. 

 

 

 

Cut the central rectangle window a little smaller than the actual photo size. (Approx. 3.75" x 5.75")

 

 

 

Cover the cardboard with a pattern paper by folding in the paper from all sides.

 

 

 

Mark and cut the smaller rectangle shown in the picture and again fold in the sides. 

 

 

 

The frame looks like this. 

 

 

 

Take the other cardboard and stick it on a solid cardstock of size 8" x 10". Cut 3 strips of craft foam (any colour) Stick them as shown on the 3 sides leaving one long side open. 

 

 

 

Fold the sides over the foam strip so it is not visible on the outside and stick them.

 

 

 

Cut and stick an acetate sheet to cover the window in the centre.

 

 

 

Apply glue tape/glue to the three sides with foam of the base cardboard and stick the top cardboard

Now to create a support stand for the frame. Take a piece of cardboard of size 2.5" x 4.5". Cover it completely (as shown in the picture) with the solid cardstock.

 

 

 

 

Take a piece of the same cardstock of sizes 2.5" x 1" and fold it in half. Take another piece of size 2" x 4.5", fold it in half and twist the two ends to form a half-inch step (refer picture). Stick one fold of these 2 pieces at the back of the stand as shown. (The 1" piece at the top and the other piece little away from the bottom.) 

 

 

 

Adhere the entire stand at the back of the frame by sticking the remaining two folds to it. 

 

 

 

The frame is now ready for decoration.

 

 

 

TIP: While inserting a photograph, stick a strip of paper at the backside... This helps easy sliding of the photo in/out of the frame. This strip can be folded at the back of the frame. (Refer Picture)

Hexagon Gift box tutorial by DT Priya Mishra

Hello Friends,

 

I am Priya with you today sharing a detailed tutorial for making a small gift box. Diwali is round the corner and I'm sure you people are creating awesome stuff for gifting. I made this box for gifting. You can put some candies or chocolates or any small gifts in it.

This is the  box. As you can see, it has a small handle, yes you can hold it from here and don't worry it won't open up. Though it is tiny, it is made really sturdy.

So let's start the tutorial...

Step 1: For this I took two pieces of white card stock measuring 9 1/2" * 4 1/8" and scored them on long side at  1 1/2", 3", 4 1/2", 6', 7 1/2", 9" and short side at 1 1/4"* 2 1/2". I am sharing both the pictures back to back for easier understanding.

 

P.S: These two pieces will be the cover and box part.

Step 2: Now, I cut the scored lines as below. The bigger squares were cut along the straight lines  and the other side is cut in a slightly triangle shape. This is for both the pieces.

 

 After cutting, both the pieces will look like this.

 

 Step 3: Now I cut along the short scoreline leaving the middle part. This is to join both ends.

 

Both the card pieces will look like this now.

 

 

Step 5: Now join both the ends of the box. I used regular white glue for this.

 

 

As you can see, both sides are joint now, I'll make the body next.

 

 

Step 6: Now I applied glue on the short sides of the box which were cut in slight triangle corners and glued each panel inside.

 

 

Now after gluing all the panels, it looked like this. This is the open side of the box.

 

 

Step 7: Now I turn the box and start attaching the bottom panels.

 

I'll take two panels facing exactly opposite to each other and stick them as shown in the picture.

 

 

Then the next two panels above them.

 

 

And finally the last two panels and this is how the bottom of the box will look like.

Step 8: Now I repeated the same steps for the other card stock and here are the final two pieces.

 

 

Step 9: I made both the top and bottom panel of the same size, I made a stopper panel for the lower part of the box, so that the lid falls exactly in place when I close it.

For the stopper panel I took a card stock measuring 6 3/4"* 2 3/4" and scored it on long side at 1 3/8", 2 3/4", 4 1/8", 5 1/2" and on short side at 1 3/8". I applied glue on the short side as shown in picture and fold it.

Step 10: Then I glued this inner panel piece to the inside of the lower part of the box. I kept it short by 1 side of the hexagon so than I can attach both upper and lower part of the box here.

 

 

Step 11: For the inside joining panel I took a card stock measuring 1 1/2"* 2 1/2* and scored in long side at 1 1/4"

 

 

 

Step 12: Now I glued this piece to the top and bottom piece of the box as shown in the picture.

 

 

And the box looks like this when opened.

 

 

And like this when closed.

 

 

Step 13: Now the box is ready. I'll start embellishing it a bit so that it looks like a gift box. For the embellishment, I cut small pieces of paper for the sides of the box. So total 12 pieces for sides. Dimensions are 1 3/8"* 1 1/8"

 

 

And attached them like this.

 

After I finished, the box looked like this.

 

 

Step 14: Now I cut 4 circles out of white card stock in the dimension of 1 1/8" and pattern paper of 1". This is for the inside and outside top and bottom part of the box.

 

 

Step 15: Now I attached one set of circle to the outside base of the box.

 

 

And like this to the inner side of the box.

 

 

Step 16: Now I cut a piece of card stock measuring 6"*6/8" for the closing flap of the box and attach pattern paper on it.

 

 

Step 17: I attached this flap on the top of the box and glued the last set of circles on that. For smoothness in closing and keep it intact, I attached small magnet on the lower side of the flap and inner side of the box.

 

 

Step 18: Now I cut another two pieces of pattern paper measuring 4 1/2"* 2/8" and glued them together to make the handle of the box and scored it at 3/8 on both sides and glued on the lid of the box and it looks like this.

 

After I made this, I so loved the idea that I made a few more with different dimensions.
